Sumario:This article analyzes the meritocracy in contemporary societies. It presents three approaches and argues the strengths of a liberal perspective with respect to other contemporary versions, such as egalitarianism. The article emphasizes the importance of creating social conditions that allow equal opportunities and synthesizes the most recurrent criticisms of meritocracy and its limits. It is a theoretical analysis of the role of individual merits in societies based on competition and freedom. On the one hand, it presents the arguments of each perspective, on the other hand, it confronts the critiques of meritocracy and its social relevance. Finally, the text argues about the validity of a conception of meritocracy related to equal opportunities.
