Sumario:The aim of this paper is to describe the situation of women’s entrepreneurship in Latin America. To this end, a documentary research was done that first analyzes the reasons for starting a business, the differences between the educational level of women and men entrepreneurs, the reasons that companies run by women have lower returns that the ones run by men, the survival rate of businesses run by men and by women, the constraints that women entrepreneurs face in accessing funding sources to enable them to develop, and the difference between the size of business operations. Finally, policies to support female entrepreneurship are discussed. The main findings show that more women than men start a business due to necessity; women generally have a higher level of education than men, and the survival rate of businesses run by men and women are similar. It was also found that the size of the business operation is lower in women-led companies; and finally, that enterprise development policies that support small businesses (SMEs) are not aimed specifically at women entrepreneurs.
