Sumario: | and implementation of contextualised workshops in relation
to students' oral communication and cultural awareness.
This study was carried out at a state-funded school
in Puerto Gaitán, Meta (Colombia) with 36 sixth graders
between 12- 14 years old. This research used the Grounded
Theory (Strauss & Corbin, 1997) and the theoretical and the
methodological triangulation to analyse the information
gathered via three instruments: students’ artefacts, teacher’s
field notes, and video/audio-recordings. The outcomes
revealed that working with contextualised workshops that
embrace local culture with an attractive design fostered
students’ meaningful learning, since the topics, localised
colourful pictures, the examples provided, and the pedagogically
sequenced activities or lessons, help them to
learn and create an effective communication. Similarly, oral
communication was a vehicle to express ideas and feelings
because students employed body movements, acquired vocabulary,
and constructed new concepts when they shared
points of view. Finally, the proposed contextualised workshops
strengthen the students’ cultural awareness through
knowing about their own culture since they reflected on
actions to take care of it.
